A large population is the foundation of a powerful empire in Ikariam. Each citizen generates gold, and a higher population allows you to field a larger army and sustain more workers and scientists. This guide covers the core mechanics and strategies to maximise your population growth efficiently.
The Core Happiness Mechanics
Population growth in Ikariam is directly governed by Happiness (Satisfaction). The higher your happiness score, the more new citizens you gain per hour . You need 1 point of happiness per citizen . Your happiness is determined by the following formula :
Happiness = (Bonuses from buildings like Tavern, Museum, and Well Digging research) – (Population)
This means that as your population grows, your happiness naturally declines unless you actively increase the bonuses from your buildings.
Key points:
- When your Town Hall is full, population growth stops entirely, and happiness remains constant .
- Corruption also decreases your total satisfaction and slows growth . To avoid this, ensure your Governor’s Residence is upgraded to match your growing Town Hall.
Early Game: Building a Growth Foundation
Your first few days are critical for establishing rapid population growth. A dedicated player can increase their Town Hall to level 7 in a single day .
Immediate Priorities:
- Town Hall: This is your primary building for population. It increases your maximum occupancy. Upgrade this as soon as your population is near the current cap .
- Tavern and Wine: The Tavern is your main happiness building. Research Wealth in the Economy branch to unlock wine production on your island . Keep your Tavern supplied with wine. You can reduce consumption by using the “ration” slider – a neutral happiness emoji indicates a good balance .
- Well Digging: This is the first research you should prioritise. It immediately provides a boost of +50 to your happiness, significantly speeding up early population growth .
Key Early Research Order:
- Well Digging (Science): +50 happiness .
- Wealth (Economy): Unlocks wine production, essential for Tavern happiness .
- Expansion (Seafaring): Allows you to build a Palace and found new colonies, which increases your total population ceiling.
Mid-Game: Population for Power
Once your first few towns are established, your population strategy shifts to directly supporting economic and military might.
Maximising Gold Income
Your citizens are your main source of gold. Unassigned citizens (those not working or doing research) produce 3 gold per hour each . A high population means you can have a large army, as you’ll have the gold income to sustain it .
Strategic Town Hall Levels
A long-term goal is to expand your Town Halls to level 28 or more for significantly greater gold production . Furthermore, having more towns is a direct path to greater population and power. A player with 9 or 10 towns can field a much larger army than an opponent with only 7 or 8 .
The Wine-Only Strategy
Some advanced players adopt a Wine-Only strategy, where every city produces wine and is self-sufficient. This eliminates the need to transport wine between towns, but you rely on trading, piracy, or pillaging to acquire the other luxury goods .
Late Game: Optimisation
In the late game, your focus should be on efficiency and sustainable growth .
Resource Reducers: A key part of a population-focused strategy is building and upgrading your resource reducers (Carpenter, Architect’s Office, etc.). These reduce building costs, allowing you to upgrade your Town Halls more efficiently . As a rule of thumb, if the total cost to upgrade a reducer is less than the resources it will save you, it is worth investing in .
Managing Town Hall Growth: Large Town Halls require significant storage to upgrade . Always ensure you have enough warehouse capacity to receive the resources. It is a good practice to upgrade your Town Hall right before you start a long Governor’s Residence upgrade, as this prevents population growth from stalling during the building time .
Time Management: To keep your population growing with no idle periods, schedule longer builds, like the Governor’s Residence, during times you will be inactive (e.g., overnight). Use shorter builds for when you are online .
Summary Checklist for Population Growth
| Phase | Key Actions |
|---|---|
| Early Game | Research Well Digging; build and supply a Tavern; build a Town Hall to level 7 on day one; research Wealth to produce wine. |
| Mid-Game | Upgrade Town Halls to level 28 for gold production; found 9-10 towns to increase citizen count and gold income; establish a stable wine supply for all towns. |
| Late-Game | Build resource reducers (Carpenter, Architect) to lower upgrade costs; plan builds to avoid idle growth periods; consider a Wine-Only strategy for self-sufficiency. |
