After weeks or months of Ikariam gameplay, you have established a solid empire, built multiple cities, and completed the essential researches. The early-game scramble for resources is behind you, and the intermediate phase of steady growth is giving way to a new reality: long build times, high upgrade costs, and the need for a clear direction.
This guide is for players ready to leave the middle ranks behind and build a truly formidable, lasting empire. The long-term game in Ikariam is not about quick expansion but about strategic depth, patience, and optimising every aspect of your empire.
Phase 1: Laying the Foundations for the Late Game
Before you can dominate, you must ensure your empire is built on a rock-solid foundation. Many players neglect the basics, leading to stagnation and vulnerability.
1. The Information War: The Level 32 Hideout
Upgrading your Hideouts across all cities to Level 32 should be your number one priority. At this level, it is incredibly difficult for enemy spies to gather intelligence on your cities.
- Why it matters: A spy can reveal the location of your army and your stockpiled resources, making you a high-value target. A level 32 Hideout effectively blinds your enemies, forcing them to attack without knowing what they will face, which deters all but the most confident attackers.
- Application: For any new colony you found, prioritise upgrading its Hideout to a high level before you even start sending large quantities of resources for construction.
2. The Army or Gold Dilemma: Optimising Military Presence
A common mistake is maintaining large, expensive armies in every city. This drains your gold reserves and slows your growth. The core principle for efficient military management is centralisation.
- Centralising Your Forces: Keep the majority of your army in one heavily fortified “fortress” city. Transfer resources from your other towns to this central hub on a regular schedule, preferably overnight, to minimise risk.
- Minimal Defence Elsewhere: For your other cities, consider leaving just a single ship in port. This forces an attacker to initiate a naval blockade before they can pillage, giving you time to react. Don’t waste gold on expensive defensive armies in towns that are not your primary military bastion.
3. The Secret Weapon: Resource Reducers
The Carpenter, Architect’s Office, Wine Press, Optician, and Firework Test Area are the most critical long-term investments in the game. While you may have built them early, they must be upgraded to their maximum potential.
- The Endgame Goal: Your ultimate goal is to upgrade all resource reduction buildings to Level 50 in every single city.
- Why they are vital: The savings are enormous. For example, a Level 32 Carpenter can reduce the wood cost of a major project so significantly that it can save you from building an entire extra Warehouse. The cumulative savings from these buildings across all your construction projects are astronomical and essential for affording late-game upgrades.
4. The Power of Many: Strategic Expansion
Having more towns is a linear path to greater power because each citizen produces gold, and each town allows you to field a larger army.
- Aim for 9, 10, or Even 11 Towns: The goal is to have more cities than your opponents. The advantage is clear: a player with 10 towns can support a significantly larger military and generate more gold than a player with only 7 or 8.
- The “Warehouse Upgrade Hell”: To achieve this, you will need substantial storage capacity for the Governor’s Residence and Palace upgrades. For your 9th city, you will need roughly 350,000 storage capacity, often achieved by building four medium-level Warehouses and replacing one with a Dump. This phase of endless warehouse upgrades is known as “Warehouse Upgrade Hell,” but it is a necessary step on the path to greatness.

Phase 2: Mastering the Endgame Approaches
Once your foundation is secure, you can choose how to apply your power. Here are the three primary strategies for long-term players.
1. The Art of War
For many, the thrill of Ikariam lies in strategic conflict. Wars are the ultimate test of your empire’s strength and your tactical abilities.
The Two Limiting Factors in War:
- Population and Gold: Your citizens are your primary source of gold. A bigger population means a bigger army. If you run out of gold, your army cannot fight.
- Distance: If your army takes 8 hours to reach an enemy, they will have ample time to prepare a strong defence.
The Ultimate Tactic: The Proxy Colony
To defeat the distance problem, create a “proxy colony” on the enemy’s island or occupy a small, vulnerable town near them. This allows you to launch attacks that are only 15 minutes away, giving your opponent almost no time to react.
2. The Piracy Economy
Pillaging other players, especially inactive ones, is one of the most profitable activities in the game. It requires a different skillset but can yield massive resource hauls.
- Step 1: Spy: Use your level 32 Hideouts to identify targets with high resources and low military defence, preferably those not in a strong alliance.
- Step 2: The Fleet: Build a very strong army with enough siege units to breach the enemy’s city wall. For maximum profitability, you should aim for the full complement of 180 Cargo Ships so you can pillage up to 90,000 goods per raid.
- Step 3: The Proxy: Use a proxy colony or occupied town to launch your raid from close range, minimising the enemy’s warning time.
3. The Trade Baron
While less active, a trade-focused strategy can be incredibly powerful for late-game players.
- Market Manipulation (High Risk): This strategy involves attempting to influence your local market by buying out cheap resources and relisting them at a higher price. While some players report success, this tactic is extremely risky.
- Critical Warning: Many players have been banned from the game for attempting this, as it often violates the “pushing” rule. You must check the specific rules of your game community before attempting any form of market manipulation. The rules are clear: Trades that provide an “unfair profit” to a higher-ranked player are prohibited.
4. Advanced Strategy: The “Mobile” Floater
If your main goal is to pillage a single target from very far away, consider creating a “mobile” colony (or ‘floater’) specifically for that purpose.
- The Method: Build a new city on your target’s island or near it. This city will not be self-sufficient; its entire purpose is to serve as a staging ground. Use Freighters to send all the looted resources back to your main empire.
- Why it works: Pillaging from a local colony is far more efficient than sending your fleet on a multi-hour journey every time. A well-developed account with high-level warehouses and depots can store millions of resources in this mobile town before shipping them home.

A Note on Time: The Player’s Most Valuable Resource
For those with limited time, the long-term game can feel like a chore. A common suggestion is that if you are content with your empire’s current state, you can reduce your activity. Log in once a week to prevent your account from going inactive. The game is forgiving, and taking a break can be beneficial to avoid burnout.
By focusing on these core principles—information dominance, economic efficiency, and strategic military application—you can transform your account from a mere collection of cities into a true power on your server.
