Population is the foundation of your empire in Ikariam. Every citizen generates gold and can be assigned as workers or researchers, making population growth essential for economic and military strength . A successful population strategy focuses on maximizing growth rate, expanding housing capacity, and protecting your citizens.
UNDERSTANDING POPULATION GROWTH
Your population growth rate is determined by the happiness score of each town. The higher your happiness relative to population, the faster your citizens multiply. Each additional citizen slightly decreases the growth rate until zero is reached, so you must continuously improve happiness to maintain growth . The formula for happiness is:
Happiness equals Base Bonus (196) plus Well Digging Bonus (50) plus Holiday Bonus (25) plus Tavern Base (12 times level) plus Tavern Wine Bonus (80 times level) plus Museum Base (20 times level) plus Cultural Goods Bonus (50 times number of treaties) minus Population.
When your Town Hall is full, growth stops. At this point, you can reduce wine supply to the Tavern until the happiness indicator shows neutral, as excess happiness is not required . However, keeping happiness at 50 or more is worthwhile in case a cultural treaty partner becomes inactive .
BUILDING AND RESEARCH PRIORITIES
Your Town Hall determines the maximum population capacity of each city . Upgrading it creates more housing space, allowing further growth. The Town Hall should be upgraded to the maximum level you can afford to ensure space for new citizens .
Taverns and Museums are the primary happiness buildings. The Tavern provides base happiness plus additional points from wine consumption . The Museum provides happiness at no ongoing cost and allows cultural treaties with other players . Upgrade both buildings together for maximum efficiency. The Museum provides base happiness while the Tavern serves as an accelerator for rapid population growth .
Several technologies directly impact population:
Well Digging increases maximum population and happiness in your Capital by 50 points .
Holiday increases happiness in all towns by 25 points and maximum population by 50 points .
Utopia increases maximum population and happiness in the Capital by 200 points .
Economic Futures increase happiness in all towns by 10 points and maximum population by 20 points for every level researched .
Researching these technologies should be a priority. The “Well Digging” technology is especially valuable early in the game as it gives a significant population and happiness boost .
POWER BUILDING STRATEGY
Power building is a dedicated strategy focused on growing population as quickly as possible . The general idea is to keep your Growth Per Hour as high as possible by maintaining high happiness levels through Tavern and Museum upgrades. The objective is to time your builds so there are no idle growth periods. A dedicated player can increase their Town Hall level to 7 in one day using this method .
Time management is the most important factor in power building. Schedule longer builds during periods when you will be inactive, such as sleeping. This utilizes game time that would otherwise be wasted. If you know you will be away later, avoid scheduling a build that will finish while you are gone. Instead, find an upgrade that will complete before you leave, allowing you to schedule another build during your absence .
The Governor’s Residence is also critical for population growth. Corruption in colonies reduces happiness and slows growth. To avoid corruption, ensure the Governor’s Residence level matches your Palace level . Building the Governor’s Residence early in a new colony prevents corruption from becoming costly. A good rule of thumb is to build the Governor’s Residence in relation to the town’s gold income per hour .
EXPANSION STRATEGY
Creating more colonies increases your total population capacity and resource production. Aim to build as many colonies as possible, as more towns mean more citizens, more gold, and the ability to field a much larger army than opponents with fewer towns .
The 9th and 10th towns are major goals for serious players. The 9th town requires a Carpenter Level 32 and two level 22 Warehouses . The benefits become clear when you can field a much larger army than opponents who have only 7 or 8 towns .
When starting a new colony, upgrade the Governor’s Residence first before building other structures. Corruption at even low levels reduces happiness, requiring more wine to keep citizens happy while producing fewer goods . Plan to create as many colonies as possible, but do not forget that each colony requires preparation before establishment .
A common mistake is starting a new town before existing towns are mature. This puts strain on resource distribution and inhibits fast growth. While a new town provides more citizens and gold, starting too early makes additional growth tedious. A dedicated player can raise 6 towns in less than 40 days using proper power building methods .
PROTECTING YOUR POPULATION
A large population makes you a more attractive target for pillaging. To protect your growth, build high-level Hideouts and place spies on defense. This makes it difficult for potential raiders to know how many resources you have or where they are stored .
A strong military also helps protect your population. Many aggressive players develop large ground forces but neglect their navy. A strong navy can inflict naval defeats and blockade enemy sulfur cities, severely hurting their economy and ability to produce troops .
Keep surplus resources to a minimum to reduce the attractiveness of your towns for pillaging. Transfer goods from all towns to a central, well-protected city once per day. If you concentrate your army and resources in one town with a high-level wall and Hideout, most enemies will avoid attacking . For other towns, leave one ship to force attackers to blockade the port. If someone takes 500-1000 resources, it is a minor loss compared to maintaining expensive armies everywhere .
MILITARY POPULATION USAGE
A large population gives you the flexibility to place workers in mines, scientists in academies, and researchers in temples. The remaining citizens generate gold, which you can use for ships or to buy resources you lack .
For military purposes, population determines how many troops you can support. Higher population means larger armies and navies . However, creating too many army units may exhaust your gold. Ensure your net gold income is positive, preferably over 5,000 gold per hour .
The Spearman is often underrated. While Swordsmen defeat Spearmen at a 3:1 kill ratio, the upkeep costs are 4:1 in the Spearman’s favor . During peacetime, recruit Spearmen in small batches to maintain a garrison at low cost. In times of war, when speed of recruitment and population recovery are crucial, hire Swordsmen . Experienced players often have a combination of both. Aggressive players favor Swordsmen for causing more losses. Peaceful players favor Spearmen because their upkeep costs are low, making them less expensive to keep without using them .
POPULATION AND HIGH SCORE
Each citizen contributes to your total score, making population growth essential for climbing rankings . To maximize score through population:
Upgrade your Town Hall for more population.
Upgrade Taverns and Museums and fill them with wine and cultural treaties to get higher happiness rates and more growth per hour .
Upgrade expensive buildings like the Museum, Tavern, Warehouse, Palace, and Governor’s Residences as these contribute the most to your Build Levels score .
Population growth through happiness management is one of the most effective ways to increase your total score and build a powerful empire.
