Piracy in Ikariam is a distinct side-activity that offers the potential for massive resource rewards, completely separate from normal pillaging. Mastery of this system can provide a significant boost to your empire’s growth, with top players earning resources comparable to (or exceeding) what they gather traditionally . This guide covers everything from the basics to advanced tactics for both raiders and those who prefer to defend.
Understanding the Piracy System
The Piracy feature is unlocked by researching Piracy in the Seafaring branch, which requires Deck Weapons . It revolves around the Pirate Fortress, a building you construct in your towns.
The core loop is a 3-week competitive cycle, with the final ranking and rewards calculated at 18:00 server time on a Sunday . Your goal is to accumulate Capture Points, which determine your rank. The top 50 players at the end of the cycle receive a resource reward .
Capture Points and Crew Strength
You can earn Capture Points in two ways :
- Capture Runs: These are risk-free, “virtual” missions you send your crew on from the Fortress menu. They cost nothing and yield Capture Points and gold .
- Raiding Other Players: This involves attacking the Pirate Fortresses of other players. A successful raid steals all of your opponent’s Capture Points .
Your Crew Strength is your main offensive and defensive stat. It is the sum of three parts :
- Base Crew Strength: Determined by the level of your Pirate Fortress. Higher Fortress levels give more base strength and a greater range for targeting other players .
- Crew Strength Bonus: A permanent bonus of 1400 strength awarded once you reach 7000 Capture Points .
- Converted Crew Strength: You can convert 10 Capture Points into 1 point of Crew Strength. This conversion takes time and locks your points until complete .
Earning Capture Points
1. The Risk-Free Approach: Capture Runs
This is your primary way to build points safely. From the Pirate Fortress menu, you can start missions of varying durations. The key to maximizing points is to look at the “Capture points per second” efficiency .
| Target Mission | Duration | Capture Points | Efficiency (pts/sec) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Smugglers | 2m 30s | 401 | 150.77 |
| Fishing Boat | 7m 30s | 962 | 60.61 |
| Wine Transportation | 15m | 1734 | 49.20 |
| Merchant Ship | 30m | 3117 | 39.33 |
| Ram Ship | 1h | 5601 | 31.41 |
| Diving Boat | 2h | 1008 | 25.12 |
| Diplomat Ship | 4h | 1814 | 20.11 |
| Castaways | 8h | 3265 | 16.12 |
| Phoenicians | 16h | 5877 | 12.91 |
Strategy: For maximum efficiency, use Smugglers when you are actively online, as they provide the best points-to-time ratio. Use longer missions (like Castaways or Phoenicians) when you are offline for extended periods .
2. The High-Risk, High-Reward Approach: Raiding Other Players
Raiding is the more aggressive path and the primary way to leapfrog in the rankings by stealing another player’s hard-earned points .
Mechanics of a Raid:
- To initiate a raid, you select a town on an island within your Pirate Fortress’s range. If the town has a Pirate Fortress, a “Raid” option will be available .
- The battle is resolved instantly. It is a direct comparison of Crew Strength, with a random “destiny bonus” of -10% to +10% applied to each side .
- The winner steals all of the loser’s Capture Points .
Finding and Choosing Targets
- Look for the Black Flag: On the world map, islands with a player who has a Pirate Fortress will display a black pirate flag. This is a clear visual indicator of a potential target .
- Assess Opponent Strength: A player’s exact Crew Strength is hidden. However, you can try to gauge their activity level and potential point accumulation by checking their activity status and past piracy rankings .
Advanced Tactics
The “Mobile Town” Strategy for Raiding
Creating a temporary colony, or “mobile town,” on or near a distant target’s island is an effective way to extend your piracy reach. This acts as a forward operating base, allowing you to raid targets far outside your normal range.
After colonizing, build a level 1 Pirate Fortress, launch your raid, and then demolish the colony . Be aware: your pirates and their points are tied to the town where the Fortress is built. If you demolish your only Fortress, you risk losing all progress .
Defense and Offense in Piracy
Your Pirate Fortress can be attacked and raided by others at any time. This creates a constant push-and-pull dynamic.
- Defending Your Points: Your best defense is a strong Crew Strength. You can also proactively convert your Capture Points into Crew Strength, but this locks them away from being stolen and prevents you from spending them .
- Ambrosia for Emergency Defense: If you are about to be raided, you can spend 15 Ambrosia to instantly convert any number of Capture Points into Crew Strength, potentially salvaging your ranking .
Maximizing Your Rewards
At the end of the 3-week cycle, the top 50 players receive a resource reward. The formula is [Multiplier] x [Warehouse Safe Capacity] in each of your towns .
The top rank (1st place) offers a 2.75 multiplier. With 5 high-level Warehouses (Level 50) in multiple cities, the potential rewards become truly enormous. For example, with 20 cities and full level 50 Warehouses, the total reward for a single resource type could reach 33 million, leading to a grand total of over 660 million resources for all five types . Given this immense value, competing for top ranks is a cornerstone of any serious long-term piracy strategy.
Strategy for Non-Raiders
If you prefer to avoid the PvP conflict of raiding, focusing entirely on Capture Runs is a viable path to a solid ranking .
- Lay Low: Avoid accumulating a huge number of points early in the cycle. This will make you a less tempting target for raiders .
- Maximize Efficiency: Consistently run the most efficient Capture Run missions. The difference in points over three weeks is substantial.
- Defensive Posture: Build your Crew Strength for protection. A high Crew Strength is a powerful deterrent against attackers looking for easy points .
