Ikariam Solo Player Guide 2026

Playing Ikariam solo is a viable and rewarding path, built on economic strength, self-sufficiency, and smart defence. The core principle is to become an unprofitable target so that attackers look elsewhere for easier prey. This guide provides a step-by-step roadmap to build a prosperous, resilient empire without relying on an alliance.

Starting Strong

Your first steps can set the foundation for a powerful empire. Resist the urge to play the tutorial too quickly as it gives valuable rewards. It is also worthwhile to consider a more advanced starting strategy.

The Relocation Strategy

A key early move for ambitious solo players is to relocate your capital to the centre of the map. Islands near the centre, around coordinates 50:50, are usually much better developed with higher-level mines and quarries, giving you far higher production rates. Being central also allows you to trade in all directions.

The process is straightforward: build an Academy to level 4, research Expansion, buy 3 Cargo Ships, build a Palace, and found a colony on a well-developed island near the centre. Once there, build a Governor’s Residence, declare it your new capital, and abandon your original town. You will lose some time but gain a much better long-term position. A good island to start on should have no less than a level 16 Sawmill and level 16 Quarry.

First Buildings

In your new capital, build four Warehouses immediately, even to just level 1. This is the most important early defence. Four level 1 Warehouses protect 480 of each resource from being stolen, and the Town Hall protects another 100. This totals 2,020 of each resource that cannot be pillaged. If an attacker gets nothing, they are just wasting their time and gold by attacking you.

Next, prioritise building an Academy and a Tavern. The Academy is your most important building besides the Town Hall; research is the key to progress. A Tavern increases population growth, which in turn fuels your economy and research.

Early Research

Focus on research that helps your economy. The priorities are:

  1. Well Construction – Speeds up population growth.
  2. Wealth – Unlocks luxury resource gathering.
  3. Preservation – Unlocks Cargo Ships for trade.
  4. Expansion – Allows you to found new colonies.

Do not research military technology early. Soldiers cost gold upkeep and slow your growth, which is the opposite of what a solo player needs.

Core Defences: The Unpillageable Empire

Your primary defence as a solo player is not a large army, but an intelligent defence that makes you a waste of time to attack.

  • Four Warehouses in every city: Maintain four Warehouses in each city and upgrade them consistently. Keep your resources under the safe level. This means actively spending, moving, selling, or stopping production before your resources exceed the protected amount. If all your resources are protected, attackers get nothing.
  • A ‘Skeleton’ Military: Having zero military score invites blind attacks. Maintain a minimum defence force in each city: 1 Spearman, 1 Slinger, and 1 Ship. A low-level City Wall (level 5-6) will also force an attacker to bring siege weapons, making the attack more costly for them. This small force drags the battle out for a second round and makes you a less appealing target.
  • The ‘0 Military Score’ Strategy: Some players advocate for having absolutely no military, arguing that if you have no troops, you cannot be defeated or lose anything in a battle. While this works, it is a very passive approach that can make you a target for players looking for easy points. A small, defensive force is generally a better deterrent.

Building Your Economy

A strong economy is the backbone of a solo empire. The goal is self-sufficiency and steady, sustainable growth.

Resource Reducers

Build Carpenters and Architects in every city as soon as possible. These buildings reduce the wood and marble cost of all future upgrades. A level 32 Carpenter, for instance, can save you from building an extra warehouse for a major project. The savings add up over time, making these buildings the best long-term investment in the game. In the early game, focus on Carpenters and Architects. Later, build Opticians (for Crystal) and Firework Test Areas (for Sulphur) as they become necessary for expensive late-game projects.

Trade and Resources

  • Marble is King: Marble is the most consistently valuable and in-demand resource. Prioritise founding a colony on a Marble island. You can then sell surplus Marble to buy the other resources you need.
  • No Military, No Sulphur Problem: If you are not building a large military, you won’t need huge amounts of Sulphur. This means you can often avoid having a Sulphur colony and simply trade for what you need.
  • High-Level Trading Post: Upgrade your Trading Post to level 15 or more. This lets you see far enough to find the best bargains and buy resources at a discount for resale at a profit.

Advanced Solo Strategies

The Wine-Only Strategy

For the truly self-sufficient solo player, the Wine-Only strategy is a powerful option. In this approach, every town produces Wine.

Why? Wine is the only resource your empire cannot function without. A wine shortage causes a major happiness penalty, reducing production and causing citizens to emigrate. By having every city produce wine, you are completely self-sufficient for population happiness and never need to transport wine between your own cities.

For the other three luxury goods (Marble, Crystal, Sulphur), you rely on trading, piracy (as a feeder for a Pirate Fortress), or pillaging inactive players. This strategy is slow and heavily reliant on others but offers unparalleled stability and self-sufficiency in the long run.

Use the Athena Wonder

For a defensive player, the Athena Wonder is incredibly powerful. It provides a massive boost to your Warehouses’ safe storage capacity. With Athena active, you can stockpile enormous amounts of resources that are completely immune to pillaging. It is the ultimate defence against being raided.

Offensive Options for Solo Players

Even a solo player can benefit from an offensive edge, especially against inactive players who can be rich sources of resources.

  • Raid Inactives: This is the most profitable and low-risk military action. You can often find inactive players with tens of thousands of resources just waiting to be taken. Use your small, targeted army to loot them.
  • Keep a ‘Floater’ for Barbarians: The Barbarian mechanic is an excellent source of gold and resources. A ‘floater’ is a colony with no military dedicated solely to spawning Barbarians for you to raid. You can abandon and recolonise it to reset the Barbarian encampment, providing a steady supply of resources and gold.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  1. Building military too early: This is the most common beginner mistake. Soldiers cost gold and slow growth.
  2. Neglecting population satisfaction: Unhappy citizens emigrate, reducing production and gold income. Ensure your Tavern is supplied with wine.
  3. Failing to trade: Since each island produces only one luxury resource, you cannot progress without trading.
  4. Stockpiling resources: Resources above your Warehouse capacity can be pillaged and are lost. Always spend or move them.
  5. Not relocating to the centre: This is a common mistake that can seriously stunt your long-term growth. A central position is key to a prosperous empire.

A solo playstyle requires patience and a different mindset from aggressive warfare. By focusing on economic efficiency, smart defence, and self-sufficiency, you can build an empire that is both prosperous and secure, able to weather any storm without the need for an alliance.
